Summary. This page is an interactive simulation of a solar kit: a 60 W panel, a 10 A PWM charge controller, an 18 Ah battery and a 300 W inverter. Use the buttons under figure 1: swap day for night, switch on the lamp, the phone and the radio, and watch how the voltage, the current and the power respond in each cable. Figures 2 and 3 show two signals inside the system that you would normally only see on an oscilloscope: the pulses the controller charges the battery with, and the wave the inverter makes. A kit this size does not run a whole house. What it does is this: by day the panel turns sunlight into electricity and stores it in the battery; by night the battery gives that energy back, enough for one or two lamps, the phones and the radio.

In short: what is this kit for, day to day?

The kit gives you electricity where there is none, and it works in two halves. By day the panel makes electricity from sunlight: you can use it there and then (charging a phone from the controller's USB ports, for instance) while it also fills the battery. By night the battery gives back what it stored during the day: enough for one or two lamps through the evening, two or three phones charged, and the radio on.El kit da electricidad donde no la hay, y trabaja en dos tiempos.

Day to day that means cooking and eating with light, homework after dark, and a phone that works for calling, telling someone, or hearing the news. It also saves the costs that keep coming back: candles, batteries, trips made only to charge a phone somewhere else. What it cannot do: fridges, irons, blenders or large tools, which ask for far more power. It is a small but steady supply, and every morning the sun fills it again.

Watch: the kit's whole cycle. By day the panel fills the battery; by night the battery lights the house.

Photovoltaic panel · 60 WPanel fotovoltaico · 60 W

1.1 The panel: what the 60 W and the 12 V on the label meanEl panel: qué significan los 60 W y los 12 V de la etiqueta

The label says 60 W and 12 V. The 60 watts are the most the panel delivers in full sun: energy per second. The "12 V" is its category, not its working voltage. It means "designed to charge 12 volt batteries", which is the standard for small systems.

Working, the panel produces around 18 volts, and that excess is deliberate. To push current into a battery you have to beat the battery's own voltage, which rises to 14.4 V while charging. The panel also loses voltage when it gets hot or when a cloud passes. The 18 V margin is what makes it charge even on an ordinary day.

Watch: the sun crosses a whole day. The watts rise and fall with the light; the voltage stays near 18 V for as long as there is sun.

AGM battery · 12 V · 18 AhBatería AGM · 12 V · 18 Ah

1.2 The battery: the system's larderLa batería: la despensa del sistema

It keeps the day's harvest in chemical form. Its label says 18 Ah: it can give 18 amps for one hour, or 1 amp for eighteen hours. Multiplied by its 12 V, that is 216 Wh of stored energy.

It is an AGM type: the acid is held in glass fibre and the case is sealed. It does not spill, it does not give off gas in normal use and it needs no maintenance, which is why it can live indoors. Its one important rule: do not take it below half charge each night (concept 3.5 explains why).Es de tipo AGM: el ácido está absorbido en fibra de vidrio y la caja va sellada.

Watch: a whole day in a few seconds. The battery rises with the sun and falls with use; the red line marks where it is wise to stop.

It sits between the panel and the battery and decides how much current passes. It does that by cutting the flow into pulses, hundreds of times a second: that technique is the PWM on its label, and figure 2 shows it live. Its screen reports the battery voltage, which is the most direct way of knowing how the system is doing.

The two USB ports give 5 V directly. For charging phones they are the best thing in the kit: no need to switch the inverter on, and no energy lost in conversions. The 10 A on the label is the most current it can take, three times what this panel gives. It is working well within itself, and that makes it last.

Watch: the controller feeds two paths at once. Pulses of 12 V to the battery (blue) and a steady 5 V to the phone (green).Mira: el regulador alimenta dos caminos a la vez.

1.4 The inverter: the translator between currentsEl inversor: el traductor de corrientes

It turns the battery's 12 V of direct current into 110 V of alternating current, like a socket in town. Its 300 W is the limit of what it can run at once: lamps, chargers, a radio, a small television. An iron or a blender asks for far more than 300 W, and the inverter shuts itself down to protect itself rather than be damaged.

Its wave is a "modified sine", a stepped version of the mains wave. Figure 3 compares the two. For nearly everything you plug in at home, the difference does not show.

Watch: the meter climbs as though you were plugging things in. Past 300 W the inverter shuts itself off to protect itself, and starts again.

Inverter · seen from the back: terminals, fuse and fanInversor · vista posterior: bornes, fusible y ventilador

1.5 The back: the inverter's defencesLa parte de atrás: las defensas del inversor

Its two protections are round the back. The fuse, beside the terminals, is a sacrificial part: if something is wired wrongly or asks for too much current, the fuse burns first and saves the device. Swap it for another the same and the inverter comes back. The fan takes away the heat the conversion makes.

The red and black terminals go straight to the battery, on short thick cables. The reason is concept 3.6: at 12 V the currents are large, and long or thin cables eat the energy as heat.

Watch: everything normal at first. Then too much current arrives, the fuse burns on purpose and the circuit stops. That is what saves the inverter.

Cables and MC4 connectorsCables y conectores MC4

1.6 The cables: made so you cannot get it wrongLos cables: pensados para no equivocarse

The panel's MC4 connectors are made for the weather: they click together, seal against rain, and do not come apart if you pull them. Positive and negative are different shapes, so connecting them the wrong way round is impossible.

The rest of the wiring follows one rule: the more current a run carries, the shorter and thicker the cable has to be. The critical run is the one between the battery and the inverter.

Watch: above, the connector goes in the right way, clicks, and the rain runs off. Below, the wrong way round, it simply does not fit.

2. The whole system, in motion2. El sistema completo, en movimiento

Condition:Condición: Loads:Cargas:

2.1 What happens by day. Sunlight does not make electricity through heat. Something else happens: each particle of light, each photon, that enters the silicon can knock an electron loose from its atom. The cell has an internal border, the p-n junction, which works like a one way ramp: it pushes every loose electron towards the same side. That ordered flow is the electric current. Figure 4 shows the process in motion. Each cell contributes half a volt; the panel wires 36 of them in series to gather about 18 V. The controller takes that current and hands it to the battery in pulses. Look at figure 2: the fuller the battery, the shorter the pulses.2.1 Qué pasa de día.

2.2 What happens at night. With no light there are no loose electrons, and the panel goes completely quiet. A less obvious risk appears here: the battery is still connected to the panel, and at night the current could run backwards and be wasted heating the panel up. To stop that, the controller has a diode: an electronic gate that only lets current through towards the battery, never back. What went in stays in. At night, then, the inverter takes the battery's 12 V of direct current and turns it into 110 V of alternating current at 60 Hz, which is what ordinary appliances use. Every appliance switched on asks for more watts, and by the relation P = V × I, more watts mean more amps leaving the battery.2.2 Qué pasa de noche.

Watch: at night the blue dots try to go back to the panel and the diode stops them. The path to the lamp stays open.

2.3 How far it goes. With about four hours of good sun, the 60 W panel makes around 240 watt-hours a day. Is that a lot or a little? A small fridge needs three times as much, so it will not stretch to that. For the essentials it will, and with numbers: a 10 W LED lamp on for six hours uses 60 Wh, charging two phones about 30 Wh, and the radio for a couple of hours another 30 Wh. All of that together fits inside what one sunny day produces. And tomorrow the sun puts it back.2.3 Para cuánto alcanza.

Watch: the bar fills with the day's sun and then divides between the light, the phones and the radio. Half of it is still left over.

Fig. 4. Inside one cell of the panel: the photovoltaic effect, step by step.Fig. 4.

All at once, or one at a time?¿Todo a la vez o de a uno?

All at once, no problem. There are two different limits here and they are worth keeping apart. The first is how much can be on at the same time, and that limit does not come from the panel: it comes from the inverter, at 300 W. At any instant the appliances feed from the battery, and the lamp, the phone and the radio together come to barely 35 W, a tenth of what the inverter will take.

The second limit is for how long, and there the stored energy decides. The battery's healthy budget is about 108 Wh a night (half of its 216 Wh, by the rule in concept 3.5). With all three on, asking for 35 W, that budget lasts about three hours. With the lamp alone, about ten. And the next day the sun replaces what was spent.

A water analogy sums it up: the panel is the tap that refills the tank, slow but steady. The battery is the tank, holding a fixed amount. The inverter is the width of the outlet pipe, how much can flow at once. And the appliances are thin straws. You can drink from all three at the same time; what you cannot do is drink for hours on end, because the tank runs down until the tap fills it again.

Watch: the same tank with three straws or with one. Keep an eye on the hours counter.

3. The ideas behind the kit3. Los conceptos detrás del kit

3.1 Volts, amps, wattsVoltios, amperios, vatios

Voltage (V) is the force pushing electrons along the cable. Current (A) is how many electrons pass per second. Power (W) is what the two make together: P = V × I.El voltaje (V) es la fuerza que empuja los electrones por el cable.

In this kit: the 60 W panel at 18 V gives up to 60 ÷ 18 ≈ 3.3 A. And when the inverter runs 35 W of appliances it draws about 3.4 A from the battery, almost the same current for half the power, because it works at only 12 V and loses a little in converting. The general rule: the lower the voltage, the more current for the same power.

Watch: both cables carry the same 35 W. Above, few electrons with a lot of push; below, many electrons with little.

Each solar cell produces about 0.5 V. It is a physical property of silicon, the same for every manufacturer in the world: the energy it costs to free an electron in that material fixes the cell's voltage.

To get more voltage, cells are wired in series, one after another, and their voltages add up: 36 cells at 0.5 V give the panel's 18 V or so. If one day you see a panel "of 24 V", you know what to expect: twice as many cells.

Watch: each cell adds half a volt as the current passes, and the column on the right fills to 18 V.Mira: cada celda suma medio voltio al pasar la corriente, y la columna de la derecha se llena hasta los 18 V.

3.3 PWM: charging in pulsesPWM: cargar por pulsos

The controller protects the battery by governing how much current reaches it. It does that with an electronic switch (a transistor) that opens and closes the path hundreds of times a second. That is PWM, pulse width modulation. The battery receives the average of those pulses.

Battery flat: long pulses, charging at full current. Battery nearly full: pulses getting shorter. Battery full: only small maintenance pulses. So it charges quickly at the start and carefully at the end, without overheating the battery.Batería descargada: pulsos largos, carga a plena corriente.

Watch: the switch opens and closes without stopping. The fuller the battery gets, the less time it spends closed.

3.4 DC → AC: what the inverter does insideCC → CA: qué hace el inversor por dentro

The battery gives direct current (DC): it always flows the same way. Ordinary appliances use alternating current (AC), which changes direction 60 times a second.

The inverter converts in two steps: four transistors reverse the direction of the current 120 times a second, and a transformer lifts the voltage from 12 V to 110 V. The wave that comes out is stepped, not a smooth curve like the mains; figure 3 shows the difference. It works fine with lamps, chargers and radios. Some motors and delicate audio equipment do notice.

Watch: the current reverses again and again (the + and − signs swap over). On the right, the wave that makes.

3.5 Amp-hours and the 50 % ruleAmperios-hora y la regla del 50 %

The battery holds 18 amp-hours at 12 V: 18 × 12 = 216 Wh. Inside it has lead plates in acid. As it discharges, lead sulphate forms on the plates; as it charges, that sulphate breaks down again.

If the discharge goes too deep the sulphate hardens and does not come back: the battery loses capacity permanently. That is why it is worth using only half the charge, about 108 Wh a night: it lasts years instead of months. The voltage tells you the state: 12.7 V at rest is roughly full; 12.0 V is roughly half, and better not to go on.Si la descarga es muy profunda, el sulfato se endurece y ya no se recupera: la batería pierde capacidad de forma permanente.

Watch: both batteries are used and recharged. The green one, taken to half, comes back the same. The red one, emptied right down, loses a piece with every cycle.

3.6 Losses in the cable: I²RPérdidas en el cable: I²R

Every cable warms a little as current passes, and that energy is lost. The loss grows with the square of the current: P = I² × R. Twice the current loses four times as much.

In this system the 12 V side moves a lot of current (300 W at 12 V is 25 A), so the cables between battery and inverter have to be short and thick. The grid uses the same principle the other way round: it transmits at very high voltages so the current is small and little is lost on the way.

Watch: the same current passes through both cables. The thin one gives off heat, energy lost; the thick one loses almost nothing.
