Tecnomilpa Rituals

Tecnomilpa Rituals brought two practices together in one room at transmediale Berlin: a painting performance and ritual, and a hands-on LoRa workshop. The milpa ran through both as the guiding metaphor.
The painting performance worked with natural pigments brought from our village in Morelos, carrying the milpa into the piece as image and as ritual. Alongside it, the LoRa workshop was hands-on: people worked directly with the communication devices, seeing how they pass short messages between each other and how a small mesh holds together, so that building and running such a network felt like something they could do themselves.
The milpa as metaphor
The milpa was the organising idea rather than a backdrop. The way a milpa grows, each part giving the others what they need, became a way to think about how the devices relate and how the room itself worked: people, pigments and hardware in the same space, each making room for the others. Painted with pigments carried from home, the metaphor stayed tied to the place it came from.

La performance de pintura trabajó con pigmentos naturales traídos de nuestro pueblo en Morelos, llevando la milpa a la pieza como imagen y como ritual. Junto a ella, el taller de LoRa fue práctico: las personas trabajaron directamente con los dispositivos de comunicación, viendo cómo se pasan mensajes cortos entre sí y cómo se sostiene una pequeña red mesh, de modo que construir y operar una red así se sintiera como algo que podían hacer ellas mismas.
La milpa como metáfora
La milpa fue la idea organizadora más que un telón de fondo. La forma en que crece una milpa, cada parte dándole a las otras lo que necesitan, se volvió una manera de pensar cómo se relacionan los dispositivos y cómo funcionaba el cuarto mismo: personas, pigmentos y hardware en un mismo espacio, cada uno haciéndole lugar a los demás. Pintada con pigmentos traídos de casa, la metáfora se mantuvo ligada al lugar del que vino.
