Tecnomilpa Rituals
Gestures and offerings between technologies. LoRa devices, collective painting, and the milpa held in the same room. Gestos y ofrendas entre tecnologías. Dispositivos LoRa, pintura colectiva y la milpa sostenidos en la misma sala.
Rituals is what tecnomilpa looks like when it steps onto a stage. Not a demonstration of hardware, but a set of gestures: offerings to and from the machines, made together with the people who came into the room.
The piece sat in two rhythms. One rhythm came from a small constellation of LoRa devices, each one passing short messages to its neighbour, the signals translated into light and sound. The other rhythm came from the room itself: hands on paper, brushes, pigment, voices.
What was shared
The audience was not an audience for long. Within minutes the seats were rearranged and the floor was a working surface. We painted together, on long strips of paper, in the company of the devices. The devices did not perform a function so much as keep us company. They blinked when we paused. They listened.
Ritual is what we do together to remember what the technology is for.
By the end there was a long painted strip and a quieter kind of attention in the room. The strip is now folded into the field archive. The recordings from the LoRa nodes are stored beside it.
What it owes the milpa
The structure of the piece came directly from a domestic milpa logic. Plant something. Wait. Let the bean find the maize. Let the squash find the floor. The piece is not a metaphor for the milpa, it tries to be one of its students.
Rituals es lo que parece tecnomilpa cuando sube a un escenario. No una demostración de hardware, sino un conjunto de gestos: ofrendas hacia y desde las máquinas, hechas junto con las personas que entraron al cuarto.
La pieza vivió en dos ritmos. Un ritmo venía de una pequeña constelación de dispositivos LoRa, cada uno pasando mensajes cortos a su vecino, las señales traducidas a luz y sonido. El otro ritmo venía del cuarto mismo: manos sobre el papel, pinceles, pigmento, voces.
Lo que se compartió
El público no fue público por mucho tiempo. En minutos las sillas se reacomodaron y el piso se volvió superficie de trabajo. Pintamos juntas, sobre tiras largas de papel, en compañía de los dispositivos. Los dispositivos no cumplían tanto una función como hacernos compañía. Parpadeaban cuando nos deteníamos. Escuchaban.
El ritual es lo que hacemos juntas para recordar para qué es la tecnología.
Al final había una tira pintada larga y un tipo de atención más silenciosa en el cuarto. La tira ahora vive doblada en el archivo de campo. Las grabaciones de los nodos LoRa se guardan junto a ella.
Lo que le debe a la milpa
La estructura de la pieza vino directamente de una lógica de milpa doméstica. Sembrar algo. Esperar. Dejar que el frijol encuentre al maíz. Dejar que la calabaza encuentre el suelo. La pieza no es una metáfora de la milpa, intenta ser una de sus estudiantes.
