A workshop that needs no lab, because its only device is a question: what is technology, and what would it mean to hack it from where we stand?

Hackeo Comunitario was made with children and young people in Quebrantadero. What follows is the outline as we would hand it to a friend: four gatherings, deliberately informal, where the facilitator's job is to hold the question open, not to answer it. The kids' questions reshaped our work every time; plan for that instead of against it.

Gathering 1 · What is technology?Encuentro 1 · ¿Qué es la tecnología?

A conversation, nothing more. Which technologies do the kids know, use, want? Write everything on the wall without sorting it. Then walk through the list together asking of each thing: who made it, where, and who does it serve? Somewhere in this session the comal, the milpa and the acequia should enter the list, not placed there by you but welcomed when a kid names them. If nobody does, ask what their grandparents use to cook, to plant, to bring water. The oldest technologies in the room are the local ones.

Gathering 2 · What does it mean to hack?Encuentro 2 · ¿Qué significa hackear?

Start from what the kids think the word means. Movies will come up; let them. Then offer the version the project stands on: hacking is claiming the right to open technology up, to ask where it comes from and who it serves, and to imagine it otherwise from a rural, local and Indigenous standpoint. Practice on something physical if you can: open a broken radio or appliance together and name what you find inside. The point is the permission, not the repair.

Gathering 3 · The community in 2090Encuentro 3 · La comunidad en 2090

The exercise the whole outline leans toward. Ask: what changes would you like to see in your community in 2090? Drawing and writing, no wrong answers, plenty of time. In Quebrantadero they drew more land, more animals, more plants, more people. Don't steer toward machines. If the future they want is greener rather than more electronic, that is data, and it is the point. Close by having each kid present their future to the others.

Gathering 4 · Robots that can and cannotEncuentro 4 · Robots que pueden y no pueden

Design robots for the 2090 they drew. Two lists per robot: what it can do, and what it cannot. In Quebrantadero the robots could water plants, cook, clean and speak, and could not feel emotions. The cannot-list is where the philosophy lives; give it as much time as the can-list. If the group has energy left, build the robots in cardboard, and let the drawings and machines hold an exhibition for families.
