Four workshops, written down so that anyone can run them anywhere: a room, some kids, materials from around the house, and local knowledge at the centre. Cuatro talleres, escritos para que cualquiera pueda hacerlos en cualquier lugar: un cuarto, unos peques, materiales de la casa, y el saber local al centro.

These materials come from the summer of 2025 in Axochiapan, where we ran more than twenty workshops with children and teenagers across three communities. They are written with measures where they matter and freedom where they don't. The one rule that is not optional is the first one; the workshop starts from what the participants already know, not from what we bring.

Estos materiales vienen del verano de 2025 en Axochiapan, donde hicimos más de veinte talleres con niñas, niños y adolescentes de tres comunidades. Están escritos con medidas donde importan y libertad donde no. 1 · Painting Circuits1 · Pintura Circuito

A collective painting that is also a working circuit. The connections and currents of a circuit are drawn as image as much as wiring, so that electricity enters through the hands and the eyes at once.

StepsPasos

  1. Start with a conversation, not a component: what in the community carries something from one place to another? Water channels, paths, gossip, roots. Draw those flows first.Empieza con una conversación, no con un componente: ¿qué en la comunidad lleva algo de un lugar a otro? Canales de agua, caminos, el chisme, las raíces. Dibujen esos flujos primero.
  2. Show one LED lighting up from a battery. Let everyone make it blink by breaking and closing the circuit with their fingers.Muestra un LED encendiéndose con una pila. Que cada quien lo haga parpadear abriendo y cerrando el circuito con los dedos.
  3. On the shared surface, paint the image the group chose. The painted lines that will carry current get copper tape laid over or beside them.Sobre la superficie compartida, pinten la imagen que el grupo eligió. A las líneas pintadas que llevarán corriente se les pone cinta de cobre encima o al lado.
  4. Place LEDs where the image wants light (eyes, stars, fruits, flowers) and connect them into the taped lines, minding polarity (long leg to positive).Coloquen los LEDs donde la imagen pida luz (ojos, estrellas, frutos, flores) y conéctenlos a las líneas de cinta, cuidando la polaridad (pata larga al positivo).
  5. Connect the battery last, together, as a small ceremony. Debug as a group: a circuit that doesn't light is a conversation, not a failure.Conecten la pila al final, en colectivo, como una pequeña ceremonia. Depuren en grupo: un circuito que no enciende es una conversación, no un fracaso.

From the field: the debugging was where the most learning happened. Resist fixing it for them.

2 · Conductivity and Binary2 · Conductividad y Binario

Binary logic made palpable by hand: the on and off of an LED becomes 1 and 0, and the conductivity of everyday materials decides which is which.

StepsPasos

  1. Each pair builds the simplest circuit: battery, clips, LED. It lights: that is 1. Open it: that is 0. The whole of computing fits in that gesture; say so.Cada pareja arma el circuito más simple: pila, caimanes, LED. Enciende: eso es 1. Se abre: eso es 0. Todo el cómputo cabe en ese gesto; díganlo.
  2. Put the tray of materials in the middle. Predict first, then test: does the lemon conduct? The dry soil? The wet? Keep a collective table of 1s and 0s on the wall.Pongan la bandeja de materiales al centro. Primero predicen, luego prueban: ¿conduce el limón? ¿la tierra seca? ¿la húmeda?   3. Give each letter of the alphabet a short code of 1s and 0s (or use ASCII for older groups). 3 · Hidden Radios3 · Radios Escondidas

Listening devices are built, then tucked into the everyday spaces of the community (a doorway, a tree, a market stall) turning the town itself into an instrument and raising, gently, the question of who listens to whom.

StepsPasos

  1. Ask first who already broadcasts here: the church speaker, the gas truck, the man who announces on a megaphone. Map the community's existing signals.Pregunten primero quién ya transmite aquí: la bocina de la iglesia, el camión del gas, el señor que anuncia con megáfono. Mapeen las señales que ya existen en la comunidad.
  2. Build or open up the receivers in pairs. Find the local stations. Find the static between them, and stay there a while; the static is also a signal.Armen o abran los receptores en parejas.   3. Disguise each radio and choose its hiding place with care and permission. Tuning it low, leave it playing where people pass.Disfracen cada radio y elijan su escondite con cuidado y con permiso. Con el volumen bajo, déjenla sonando donde pasa la gente.
  4. Walk the route together as an audience. Then gather and talk: who noticed, who stopped, how did it feel to have hidden a voice?Caminen la ruta juntas como público. Luego reúnanse y platiquen: ¿quién se dio cuenta, quién se detuvo, qué se sintió haber escondido una voz?

From the field: the hiding was the pedagogy. Choosing where a voice goes taught more about media than any diagram of a transmitter.

4 · micro:bit Sessions4 · Sesiones micro:bit

Sensing, inputs and code through small, tangible projects; the board is only interesting for what it lets the group notice about their own place.

  1. First program: your name or an animal on the LED grid. Ten minutes from zero to something of yours on the screen; speed matters for trust.Primer programa: tu nombre o un animal en la cuadrícula de LEDs. Diez minutos de cero a algo tuyo en la pantalla; la velocidad importa para la confianza.
  2. Explore the sensors one by one as questions about the place: how hot is it in the shade vs the sun? How dark is the classroom corner? From the field: board-to-board radio messages were the favourite. The network, not the device, is what they remembered.
