A node is a seed: a small radio that runs on sunlight, speaks to its neighbours, and needs no company, no contract, no grid. This is how we grow ours. This guide is written from the nodes we have planted in Southampton, the achtli boards of Seeds and Signals, and the work in Morelos. It assumes no prior experience. Where we name a specific part, treat it as our habit rather than a rule; LoRa hardware changes fast, and the guide is the pattern, not the shopping cart.

The partsLas piezas

  • A LoRa board. We use ESP32-based boards with LoRa radio and a small screen (the Heltec LoRa 32 family is what the achtli are). Any board supported by Meshtastic works.Una placa LoRa.   • A small solar panel with a charge controller. The voice (firmware)La voz (firmware)

  1. Flash Meshtastic, the open source mesh firmware, from its web flasher; it runs in the browser over USB, no toolchain needed.Flashea Meshtastic, el firmware mesh de código abierto, desde su flasher web; corre en el navegador por USB, sin instalar nada.
  2. Set your region's frequency the first time the device boots. This is the one setting that is not optional.Configura la frecuencia de tu región la primera vez que arranca el dispositivo. Ese es el único ajuste que no es opcional.
  3. Name the node. We name ours as seeds: achtli one through five crossed Turtle Island with their names. A node with a name gets tended; a MAC address gets forgotten.Nombra el nodo. The plantingLa siembra

  1. Antenna on first, always. Then battery to board, panel to charging input. Watch it charge for an afternoon indoors before trusting it outside.La antena primero, siempre. Luego batería a la placa, panel a la entrada de carga. Míralo cargar una tarde bajo techo antes de confiarle la intemperie.
  2. Seat everything in the enclosure so the panel faces the sun's path and water cannot pool. This is the shape of Seeds and Signals, which you can repeat with any group: five boards, one table, two hours.
