Seeds and Signals had already been taking shape before the 2026 AISES in Canada National Gathering in Toronto. The gathering gave us a chance to connect with others and start putting the idea into motion: sharing seeds and signals across territories, with the possibility of gradually building a translocal solidarity network between places.Semillas y señales ya venía tomando forma antes del Encuentro Nacional de AISES en Canadá de 2026, en Toronto. El encuentro nos dio la oportunidad de conectar con otras personas y empezar a poner la idea en marcha: compartir semillas y señales entre territorios, con la posibilidad de ir construyendo poco a poco una red de solidaridad translocal entre lugares.
AISES, the American Indian Science and Engineering Society, brings together Indigenous students and professionals working across science, technology, engineering and related fields. For our session, we brought five Heltec LoRa radios. We configured them together, sent messages between them and talked about what it would take to build, maintain and adapt small communication networks in different places.AISES, la American Indian Science and Engineering Society, reúne a estudiantes y profesionales indígenas que trabajan en ciencia, tecnología, ingeniería y campos afines. Para nuestra sesión llevamos cinco radios LoRa Heltec. Los configuramos entre todas, mandamos mensajes de uno a otro y hablamos de lo que hace falta para construir, mantener y adaptar redes de comunicación pequeñas en distintos lugares.
What happened around the radios was as important as the radios themselves. The session gathered a lot of interest. People asked how far they could communicate, what they needed for power, how Meshtastic worked and whether something similar could be made where they lived. The idea had existed before Toronto, but this was the first chance to start sharing it with people who might carry it somewhere else.Lo que pasó alrededor de los radios importó tanto como los radios mismos. We called the first five radios achtli, seed in Nahuatl. The name came from the idea behind the session itself: sharing seeds and signals across territories. By the end of the gathering, a few radios remained around Toronto while others were travelling to Vancouver and Los Angeles.A los primeros cinco radios los llamamos achtli, semilla en náhuatl. El nombre viene de la idea misma de la sesión: compartir semillas y señales entre territorios. Al terminar el encuentro, unos cuantos radios se quedaron por Toronto y otros iban de camino a Vancouver y Los Ángeles.
That means figuring things out materially. How will a radio be powered? Where will it stay? Who knows how to repair it? Who else needs to learn? A locally held network only becomes useful through the people who maintain and use it, and different places may make very different decisions about what they need.Eso implica resolver cosas materialmente. ¿Cómo se va a alimentar un radio? ¿Dónde se va a quedar? ¿Quién sabe repararlo? ¿Quién más necesita aprender? Seeds and Signals is still at that point. Five radios do not make a translocal solidarity network. But there are now radios in different places, people who have started learning and experimenting with them, and relationships through which seeds, signals and knowledge can continue to move.Semillas y señales está todavía en ese punto. Cinco radios no hacen una red de solidaridad translocal. Pero ahora hay radios en distintos lugares, personas que han empezado a aprender y a experimentar con ellos, y relaciones por las que las semillas, las señales y el conocimiento pueden seguir moviéndose.
