Tecnomilpa Mesh Soton

Tecnomilpa Mesh Soton is the practice planted in English soil. A small constellation of solar powered LoRa nodes, each one carried in a wicker enclosure made for the purpose, deployed across Southampton in conversation with a local community space.
The first nodes were placed during a community workshop at October Books in May 2026. Two students from Winchester School of Art co facilitated the session, paid for their time and named on the project alongside the longer term collaborators.
Why here
The milpa and the minga live in the relations they are part of, not only in the soil they grow from. Bringing the practice to Southampton was an experiment in seeing whether the logic travels: whether the same patience with land, the same insistence on assembly, the same care for the local maker, can hold in a port city in southern England.
The mesh is the milpa we plant in a place that is not yet ours.
The wicker enclosures are the visible answer to that question. They are not skins for the hardware. They are companions. The weave was learned in dialogue with local basket makers and the form of each enclosure responds to where its node will sit.
How it grows
The deployment is iterative. A node is placed, listened to, moved, replaced, talked about, taken home. The network is not a system to be installed and forgotten. It is a relation to be tended, which means it is sometimes broken and sometimes repaired and sometimes left alone for a season.
The project is funded through a HEIF KEE budget and held at the University of Southampton. The students who took part remain co authors of the documentation.
Tecnomilpa Mesh Soton es la práctica sembrada en suelo inglés. Una pequeña constelación de nodos LoRa solares, cada uno cargado en una envoltura de mimbre hecha para el propósito, desplegados a lo largo de Southampton en conversación con un espacio comunitario local.
Los primeros nodos se colocaron durante un taller comunitario en October Books en mayo de 2026. Dos estudiantes de Winchester School of Art co facilitaron la sesión, remunerados por su tiempo y nombrados en el proyecto junto a las colaboradoras de más largo plazo.
Por qué aquí
La milpa y la minga andina viven en las relaciones de las que son parte, no solo en el suelo del que crecen. Traer la práctica a Southampton fue un experimento para ver si la lógica viaja: si la misma paciencia con la tierra, la misma insistencia en la asamblea, el mismo cuidado por la persona que hace localmente, pueden sostenerse en una ciudad portuaria del sur de Inglaterra.
La red mesh es la milpa que sembramos en un lugar que todavía no es nuestro.
Las envolturas de mimbre son la respuesta visible a esa pregunta. No son pieles para el hardware. Son compañeras. El tejido se aprendió en diálogo con personas locales que hacen canasta y la forma de cada envoltura responde al lugar donde se sentará su nodo.
Cómo crece
El despliegue es iterativo. Un nodo se coloca, se escucha, se mueve, se reemplaza, se conversa, se lleva a casa. La red no es un sistema para instalarse y olvidarse. Es una relación para cuidar, lo que significa que a veces está rota y a veces reparada y a veces dejada en paz por una temporada.
El proyecto está financiado a través de un presupuesto HEIF KEE y se sostiene en la Universidad de Southampton. Las estudiantes que participaron siguen siendo coautoras de la documentación.
