Tecnomilpa Mesh Soton
A testbed for solar mesh networks growing across Southampton: nodes in wicker enclosures, planted with cooperative organisations that are community led and migrant led. Why here
Because one of us lives here. We work where we are, not only where we come from. In spring 2026 that meant running mesh network workshops with students from the University of Southampton, hosted at October Books, a cooperative bookshop and community space in the city.
The members of October Books took part, and asked to host the first node. They wanted to understand the network and to build their own technological infrastructure, on their own terms. That is how the first node was planted: not deployed, but invited. Two Creative Computing students co facilitated the workshop, were paid for their time, and are now making a zine that documents the project.
How it grows
A node is placed, listened to, moved, replaced, talked about, taken home. The network is a relation to be tended, sometimes broken, sometimes repaired, sometimes left alone for a season.

Por qué aquí
Porque una de nosotras vive aquí. Trabajamos donde estamos, no solo de donde venimos. En la primavera de 2026 eso significó dar talleres de redes mesh con estudiantes de la Universidad de Southampton, en October Books, una librería cooperativa y espacio comunitario de la ciudad.
Las integrantes de October Books participaron y pidieron alojar el primer nodo. Querían entender la red y construir su propia infraestructura tecnológica, en sus propios términos. Así se sembró el primer nodo: no desplegado, sino invitado. Dos estudiantes de Creative Computing cofacilitaron el taller, con su tiempo remunerado, y ahora hacen un zine que documenta el proyecto.
Cómo crece
Un nodo se coloca, se escucha, se mueve, se reemplaza, se conversa, se lleva a casa. La red es una relación para cuidar, a veces rota, a veces reparada, a veces dejada en paz por una temporada.
